Brush fire burns 3 acres near 118 Freeway in Chatsworth area

California

CHATSWORTH — A fire scorched about three acres of brush Wednesday near the westbound 118 Freeway in the Chatsworth area, but no structures were damaged.

Firefighters were sent to the freeway near Topanga Canyon Boulevard shortly after 11 a.m., according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

“All visible flames are extinguished, and firefighters have handlines completely surrounding the burn area — contained,” the LAFD reported shortly after noon. “No structures were damaged and no injuries reported.”

Some lanes of the westbound freeway were closed as a precaution during the firefighting effort. Los Angeles County firefighters were sent to assist.

Temperatures soared into the 90s Wednesday in the San Fernando Valley on the first day of a three-day heat wave that, combined with strong winds in some mountain and valley areas, was increasing the local risk of wildfires.
