Clearly, I am on the kick of putting on a full concert in the evenings when I get home.
So, naturally, I’ve got another amazing one that I need to share with y’all.
Lynyrd Skynyrd, 1977, Convention Hall in New Jersey…it’s a masterpiece.
At the time, the band hit the road right before they were gearing up to release their fifth studio album Street Survivors, the first studio album with new guitar player Steve Gaines.
The group was peaking in their stardom, producing new albums left and right, and was touring as much as possible. They embraced everything the rockstar life threw at them to keep their cult following fan base happy.
This concert was filmed three months before the tragic plane crash that killed three of the band’s members; Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gains, and backup singer Cassie Gaines. Other members of the crew were seriously injured during the crash.
With this being one of the last full concerts fully captured on film before the horrific accident, the viewer can soak up every moment with all the original band members.
“You Got That Right”
The black and white film perfectly captures the American rock band’s essence. Ronnie Van Zant takes charge of the stage with killer vocals. He is accompanied by Allen Collins, Steve Gaines, Gary Rossington, Leon Wilkenson, Billy Powell, Artimus Pyle, Cassie Ganes, Leslie Hawkins, and Jo Jo Billingsly.
Guitar solos are featured in almost every song throughout the show, highlighting the talent within the band. The jam session concert rolls from song to song non-stop.
They throw in a great cover of Jimmie Rodger’s “T For Texas.” Their rock version of this classic 1920s country song is energetic and pulls a rough twang from Van Zant.
