Nisei Week Grand Parade celebrated Japanese, Japanese American culture on Sunday in Little Tokyo

The 80th annual Nisei Week Grand Parade on Sunday included taiko drum performers, participants from local community groups and high schools, elected officials and representatives, and the newly crowned 2022 Nisei Week queen and court.

Grand marshals included community leader and entrepreneur George K. Sugimoto and Olympic ice dancing bronze medalists Alex Shibutani and Maia Shibutani, and honorary grand marshal Kellyn Acosta, soccer player with the Los Angeles Football Club.

Nisei Week continues in Little Tokyo daily this week and culminates on Aug. 20-21 with a two-day “Plaza Festival” at the Japanese American Community and Cultural Center.

Saturday’s event, 11 a.m.-4 p.m., includes martial arts demonstrations, entertainment and a mini-food festival sponsored by Day-Lee Foods. The center will be open to view exhibits on both days.

During the festival on Sunday, 11 a.m.-4 p.m., there will be a “Taiko Gathering,” with Japanese drum groups from across Southern California. The weekend’s festival venue is 244 S. San Pedro St., Los Angeles (jaccc.org/plan-your-visit)

Nisei Week’s closing ceremony and “Ondo Street Dance Party” takes place, 4-6:30 p.m. Aug. 21 on First Street between Central Avenue and San Pedro Street, Los Angeles.
