This video combines two of my favorite things, Sierra Ferrell and Neil Young.
I was scrolling through Instagram late last night when I saw Ferrell tease this video. I immediately opened YouTube to listen to the whole cover.
I must admit, I have played it an absurd amount of times over the last 12 hours.
The Hippie Shake and The Close Encounter Club caught Ferrell on a leg of her European tour to film some content.
One of the songs they captured is Neil Young’s classic tune, “Harvest Moon.”
The tune was released in 1992 on Neil Young’s album with the same name. The Harvest Moon album is arguably one of Young’s most popular albums, and this tune is one of his most well-known singles.
This sweet and laid-back song is about how love holds steady through the changing seasons. Typically, a harvest moon is bright and orange and occurs near the end of summer.
As he sings, “Because I’m still in love with you/ I want to see you dance again/ Because I’m still in love with you/ On this harvest moon,” the listener can imagine a cool summer night as the sky is lit up from a full colorful moon.
But this cover is breathtaking.
Ferrell accompanies herself on guitar, and the lyrics come off effortlessly for her. Her West Virginia twang and her light and airy vocals give the song a softness and let the lyrics be heard in a new light.
To say I am obsessed with this cover is an understatement. I will have it on repeat for the foreseeable future.
In the same session, Ferrell also sang her single, “Rosemary,” which is a knockout acoustic performance.
