Cody Johnson’s “Hat Made Of Mistletoe” Is the Perfect Feel-Good Christmas Song

Music

I love Christmas music, especially when it’s country artists singing it.

All of those classic songs are great. “Jingle Bells,” “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” and all that jazz, but let’s be honest… those songs can be totally overplayed and can get a little boring after a while.

That’s why I much prefer the new original country Christmas songs that we get every year. I know it’s not country, but there’s a reason why “All I Want for Christmas Is You” is one of the greatest Christmas songs of all time.

Personally, I adore “Christmas Cookies” by George Strait and “Hell of a Holiday” by Pistol Annies.

But one of my other favorites comes from Cody Johnson’s 2021 Christmas album A Cody Johnson Christmas. The whole album is definitely a must-listen for this holiday season with classics like “White Christmas” and “I’ll Be Home for Christmas.”

The stand-out though is “Hat Made of Mistletoe,” which is going to be a feel-good staple on all of my holiday playlists.

This adorable song has the eight-year-old singer trying to woo Miss Darla, who he thinks is as shiny as a brand new toy. The singer is trying to figure how how to get Darla to give him a chance, but he soon puts together a foolproof plan:

“If I had a hat made of mistletoe
I would wear it everywhere I go
And when I got the chance Darla
I’d pull you in close
If I had a hat made of mistletoe…”

Of course, this hat isn’t the only thing the boy has in his belt as he showers Darla with compliments and tells her how good they would be together:

“There’s a pretty heart-shaped locket in that five and dime window
Been saving up my nickels and that’s what I’m gonna getcha
‘Cause you and me are like mac ‘n’ cheese the way we go together
We could ride my pony off into that sunset forever…”

I mean, come on. This is a classic cowboy song of saving money to ride off into the sunset on a horse with the girl you love. But now it’s adorably packaged in a pint-sized Christmas song.

Another added bonus is that it’s a clothing-related Christmas song that isn’t emotionally scarring like “Christmas Shoes.”

It’s just kinda the perfect song for the holidays.
