Watch Chris Stapleton & Dwight Yoakam Cover Of Ray Charles & Willie Nelson’s “Seven Spanish Angels”

Music

HOT DAMN.

Taking back to the 2016 when Chris Stapleton teamed up with the great Dwight Yoakam for a cover of Willie Nelson and Ray Charles’ “Seven Spanish Angels.”

Written by Troy Seals and Eddie Setser, “Seven Spanish Angels” was recorded by Willie Nelson and Ray Charles in 1984, and released on Charles’ album Friendship, and then later included on Willie’s 1985 duets compilation album, Half Nelson.

It was the most successful of Ray’s eight hits on the country chart, as the single spent one week #1 one and a total of twelve weeks on the country chart.

And alongside the angelic Morgane Stapleton, they KILLED it.

Dwight recently joined Chris on select dates during his All-American Roadshow Tour this summer.

Chris Stapleton Sings Garth Brooks’ “Shameless”

Chris Stapleton has the kind of voice that can make a grown man cry.

And a few years back, he did.

Garth Brooks was in tears during a performance at the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize tribute concert back in early 2020.

Granted, Garth probably cries about five times a day, at anything and everything. I mean, Trisha starts pulling a tater tot casserole out of the oven and you can already picture Garth pouncing like a puma on the Kleenex box.

But still, I don’t want to take anything away from Chris… it was the kind of performance that moved the whole room.

Back in March of 2020, Garth was chosen to receive the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, which was presented to him during a tribute concert featuring performances from Keith Urban, Lee Brice, Ricky Skaggs, Keb Mo, his wife Trisha Yearwood, and of course, the great Chris Stapleton.

Chris Stapleton Steals The Show

And while Garth was the man of the hour, Chris Stapleton might’ve stolen the show.

Performing Garth’s 1991 hit single “Shameless,” which was originally written and recorded by Billy Joel a couple years prior, Chris earned himself a standing ovation from everybody in attendance, and a couple of tear-soaked eyes from Garth himself.

I wish the video was a little better quality, but hey, that’s the price you pay when you’re mining the caverns of the interwebs for country music gold. We’ve made it a habit to uncover a ton of these hidden gems over the years, so it’s only a matter of time before this video starts popping up on all the other sites (you know who you are).

My only regret is that we don’t have a camera on Garth the entire time. I would love to get a little split screen action going… listening to Chris and watching every single emotion fill Garth’s face in real time. In fact, the next time we honor Garth Brooks with some kind of lifetime achievement award, that needs to be priority number one. I mean, who wouldn’t pay to watch that?

Anyways.. without further ado, the great Chris Stapleton honoring Garth Brooks with a insanely good cover of “Shameless,” featuring Garth’s priceless reactions.

Yep, it was an emotional roller coaster for G… let’s go to the tape.

Garth’s Emotional Reaction

In the early going, Garth was steady as a rock, just vibing.

Trisha was looking a little stone-faced, but hey, it’s gonna be a long night and her purse is probably packed with Kleenex for G right now.

So much Kleenex in there…

Once Chris really got going, G just couldn’t contain himself anymore.

Trisha still pretty stone-faced, but just imagine that gorilla-strength dad grip Garth has on her hand right now. She’s in pain…

And then…. the waterworks…

Finally, the standing salute.

And speaking of “Shameless,” don’t forget to check out Cody Johnson’s version as well.
