On This Date: Travis Tritt Released His Very First #1 Hit “Help Me Hold On” In 1990

There’s nothin’ like your first #1 hit.

On this date in 1990, Travis Tritt released “Help Me Hold On,” which was written by Travis along with Pat Terry.

He included the song as the second single to his 1990 debut album Country Club, and it ultimately peaked at #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, becoming his very first single to top the country charts.

The song itself is a good old fashioned country ballad, where he begs the girl that’s leaving him to sit down and explain where he went wrong, after he realizes he doesn’t actually know what exactly he did that’s caused her to want to end the relationship.

And of course, Tritt went on to become a 90’s country legend, racking up four other #1’s and 15 Top 10 singles throughout his career.

He most recently released his great album Set in Stone in 2021, but it all started 33 years ago today with this country heartbreaker:
