VAN NUYS — Firefighters contained and extinguished a fire early Wednesday morning that spread to the roof of a two-story commercial building in Van Nuys.
Fire crews responded at 3:27 a.m. to 6740 Kester Ave., south of Vanowen Street, where they found several units in the 15,500-square-foot building engulfed in flames, said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey. The location is across Kester Avenue from the Van Nuys DMV.
Regarding initial reports of a pet dog dying in the fire, a statement from the LAFD said, “Upon very close examination, debris within the heavily damaged and smoke charged building that strongly resembled a burnt pet canine thankfully proved not to be an animal.”
It took 126 firefighters 56 minutes to extinguish the blaze.
No injuries were reported, and Humphrey said fire crews will remain at the scene to monitor any smoldering debris and assist with the investigation of the fire.
