Charles Wesley Godwin Honors The Late, Great Tom Petty With “Time To Move On”

Music

It has been just over 6 years since the great Tom Petty passed away on October 2, 2017, just 18 days before what would have been his 68th birthday.

Last night, right in the middle of the 18 day stretch between Petty’s passing and his birthday, a star-studded cast of talented musicians descended upon Brooklyn Bowl Nashville to pay homage to the legendary artist and perform his music in Handle With Care: A Tribute To Tom Petty.

For those of us that weren’t there to experience the tribute in person, participant Charles Wesley Godwin took to Instagram yesterday to give fans a glimpse of what was to come later that night with an acoustic cover of Petty’s “Time To Move On.”

Originally included on the 1994 hit sophomore solo album Wildflowers, alongside the likes of “You Wreck Me,” “You Don’t Know How it Feels,” and the classic title track “Wildflowers,” “Time To Move On” is one of the more underrated songs in Petty’s catalog, and Godwin absolutely kills his rendition of the tune.

Check out the original version by Mr. Petty himself here:

Man, Tom Petty could flat out write a song, and Godwin sure can sing ’em.

Joining Godwin at the Handle With Care: A Tribute To Tom Petty show were over a dozen more musicians who were heavily influenced by Petty’s songwriting and sound.

All contributing songs backed by Brooklyn Bowl’s house band led by Derek Wells, other artists included Wynonna Judd, Wyatt Flores, Ella Langley, Meg Mcree, Ben Chapman, and so many others.

And while we’re on the subject of honoring Tom Petty, I’ll leave y’all with a few of my favorites from his catalog. There are so many good ones though, and I highly recommend taking a deep dive into Petty’s music if you haven’t already done so.

“You Wreck Me” – Wildflowers (1994)

“You Don’t Know How it Feels” – Wildflowers (1994)

“Breakdown” – Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers (1976)

“Listen to Her Heart” – You’re Gonna Get It! (1978)

“Runnin’ Down a Dream” – Full Moon Fever (1989)
