Track will appear on the Brockhamtpon founder’s upcoming rock-inspired solo album, Blanket

Brockhampton founder Kevin Abstract has shared another new song, “Running Out,” from his upcoming solo album, Blanket, out Nov. 3.

The song finds Abstract continuing to explore the contours of indie and alternative rock, with a simmering lo-fi guitar riff that gives way to the uneasy keen of a synth. The song is moody and somber even as Abstract maintains his penchant for pop craftsmanship, especially with his melodic choices as he sings, “I really think you understand/I’m guilty, boy, in my grief/I really think you understand me/I like how you been seeing me boy/You’re my grief.”

“Running Out” marks the third offering from Blanket, following the title track and “What Should I Do?”Both songs arrived with accompanying music videos that were billed as complementary short films: “Blanket” was paired with the apocalyptic “Gum” visual, while “What Should I Do?” was combined with “Slip N Slide,” a 50-second spot about a slip-n-slide that leads to a strange void.

Blanket is Abstract’s first solo release since 2019’s Arizona Baby. After that, he primarily focused on the final phase of Brockhampton, which went on indefinite hiatus last year following the release of two final albums, The Family and TM. Abstract also released collaborations with a variety of artists like $not, Ryan Beatty, Easy Life, and Baird.

Abstract made Blanket over a three-month span in early 2023. He primarily worked alongside producer and longtime collaborator Romil Hemnani, as well as multi-instrumentalist Jonah Abraham. In a previously released statement, Abstract explained some of his influences and reference points for the album, saying, “I wanted to make, like, a Sunny Day Real Estate, Nirvana, Modest Mouse type of record. But I wanted it to hit like a rap album.”
