Cher Admits She ‘Never Liked’ Her Voice ‘That Much’

Cher, let’s switch voices. In a new interview with Paper Magazine, the pop legend revealed that she’s not a “fan of Cher” and that she thinks her voice is “weird.”

“I just never liked my voice that much. If I had my choice, I probably would have another one, but I didn’t get my choice. I got my mother’s voice,” she told Paper‘s Justin Moran. “It’s weird. It doesn’t sound like a man, it doesn’t sound like a woman. I’m somewhere more in-between.”

“I have this strange style. I do what you do when you can’t hold a note: I don’t pronounce my Rs,” she added. “I guess some consonants are hard to sing, so I just gotta leave them open.”

The singer continued by saying that because “people seem to like it,” she’s “happy as a clam,” but she would’ve opted for a different voice than the one she has. She thinks it’s similar to her mom’s voice, though hers was “softer, mine is edgier.”

The revelation came after Cher spoke about fan responses to much of her music.

“I’ve made so many albums, and some of the ones I thought were as good as I could like an album of mine weren’t hits,” she said. “And then other ones that I was not that excited about [were]. But my career has been like this [makes an up-and-down motion].”

“So I like this album. I’m not a Cher fan, but I like doing it,” she added. “When I listen to it, I think this worked out. It wasn’t planned out, but it worked out.”

Among the tracks that she was surprised by how they were received were “Song for the Lonely” and “You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me.” She also named Walking in Memphis.

“I thought Closer to the Truth was a really good album, but it just didn’t happen,” she said. “Yeah, there are songs on it that I like, but it doesn’t make any difference because it’s not what I like, it’s what people like.”

The cover story with Cher marks Paper‘s return after briefly shutting down earlier this year.

As part of her promotional tour for her new Christmas album, Cher recently revealed she is ready to pack her bags if Donald Trump finds his way back into the Oval Office. In a broad-ranging interview with the Guardian, the singer was asked how she felt about Donald Trump being potentially re-elected. “I almost got an ulcer the last time,” Cher replied. “If he gets in, who knows? This time I will leave [the country].”

Christmas was released on Oct. 20. The 13-track album features four original singles and new interpretations of “Santa Baby,” “Run Rudolph Run,” and “Please Come Home For Christmas.”
