Matthew McGinn, a chart-topping country music songwriter who has written hits for the likes of Kane Brown, Blake Shelton, Tim McGraw, Dustin Lynch, and more has been arrested on some pretty heinous allegations.

Last week, McGinn was booked into the Metro Nashville Jail on charges of an order of protection violation, kidnapping, and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon stemming from a violent incident with his girlfriend, Carly Strickland.

According to Scoop Nashville, an order of protection was filed against McGinn on October 27th, which details the violent behavior. He allegedly refused to let Strickland leave his home when a verbal altercation broke out on October 26th.

He was reportedly heard on a recording threatening to “kill her” and “slit her dog’s throat” if she tried to leave.

She alleges:

“He began to throw my objects down the stairs, push me down to the ground, and then push me up against a wall. He demanded that I could not leave and he started to threaten my dog by saying ‘I will strangle this motherf**ker and I will kill this b**ch to hurt you.’

He then began to threaten me by saying ‘I want you to die, I will kill you first… listen to me motherf**ker.’ He was punching items around me and, at one point, even took off his shirt and wrapped it around my body.

He asserted that I would be ‘allowed to leave’ when he was ‘done with me.’ I was terrified. I fled to my car to try and leave, but his car was parked at the top of the driveway, leaving me unable to exit.”

A History Of Violence

According to the order of protection, this is not McGinn’s first violent outburst. Earlier this year, another police report was filed against him.

She says:

“Matt an unpredictable individual who gets escalated without warning. In February of 2023, another police report was filed after he pulled in front of my car, forced himself in, and threw a water bottle around.

I kindly ask the court to order Matthew McGinn to stay away from me, my home, and my workplace, and to not contact me indirectly or directly. All the statements above are true and occurred in Davidson County.”

Yikes…

He is expected to appear in court on Tuesday, November 7, 2023.

Country Music Career

McGinn won SESAC Songwriter of the Year in 2018 and in 2020, and has written a number of #1 hits in the country music industry, most notably for Kane Brown.

More recently he’s co-written a number of songs from Staind’s latest album, Confessions of the Fallen, and his credits include cuts by Meghan Patrick, Lindsay Ell, Chris Young, Parmalee, Josh Abbott Band, Florida Georgia Line and more.
