Honky tonk as hell.
This weekend, Miranda Lambert returned to her old stomping grounds in Austin, Texas, where she played a surprise, very intimate show for about 200 lucky fans.
The Texas native played some new songs from her forthcoming Postcards From Texas album, as well as a few old fan-favorites, and was joined by friends in Jack Ingram and Jon Randall for songs like “Tequila Does” and “In His Arms,” which were included on their collaborative The Marfa Tapes record.
Of course, as a Miranda fan girl, I’ve been loving going through social media and hearing clips of the live performances of all the new music, because the album has started off really strong with already-released songs like “Alimony” and “Dammit Randy.”
And let’s just say, she didn’t disappoint…
Simply for the title, I was eager to hear “B*tch On The Sauce (Just Drunk),” which is as sassy and fun as I was hoping it would be:
“It happens every time,
I crack open up that bottle,
And I light that cigarette,
And it’s like aw, shit here comes trouble,
Everything about me says don’t do that,
But the devil on my shoulder’s saying don’t look back,
And I wonder, what spell are we under,
Are we in love, or are we just drunk?”
I might have to listen to that one first on release day…
Miranda has previously said her new record is “honky tonk as hell,” and it she produced it alongside the aforementioned Jon Randall at Austin’s legendary Arlyn Recording Studios, so it was cool to see her back at the venue where played her very first label showcase almost exactly 20 years ago to the day.
Miranda looked like she felt right at home, and she says that she still has that “same fire” as a young 20-something Miranda did too:
“I have a brand new album, and I have the same fire that I had 20 years ago at that show. I love a honky tonk. It’s how I grew up. It’s in my DNA.”
The more I hear from this project, the more I can see how “Miranda” it really is, and I can honestly say it might be one of her best yet.
September 13th can’t come soon enough… here’s the teaser of “B*tch On The Sauce (Just Drunk)” she posted on social media:
