Country music is taking the top spots.
The end-of-year lists for 2024 have commenced, and we care about this one. Who are the artists who have played the most on TouchTunes? Each year, dive bargoers spend too much money on TouchTunes, ensuring they listen to quality music while knocking back a few cold ones.
While the music service offers a multitude of genres and songs, country music dominated their year-end statistics this year.
Earlier this year, TouchTunes reported that Chris Stapleton’s “Tennessee Whiskey” was pushed out for the most-played song by Shaboozey’s “Tipsy (A Bar Song).”
“A Bar Song (Tipsy)’ tops the TouchTunes Frontline Chart, which ranks music released in the last 18 months, for the second quarter of 2024 (covering April 1-June 30). It’s also the most played song among the entire catalog of songs available on TouchTunes (besting all songs on the TouchTunes Catalog Chart, which ranks any music released longer than 18 months ago).”
When this news broke, while some TouchTunes users were fans of Shaboozey’s catalog, I, for one, would rather listen to the silky smooth vocals of Chris Stapleton’s “Tennessee Whiskey” even though it’s highly overplayed.
But the good news for the year-end data from TouchTunes is that Shaboozey is far from the top of the most-played artists. TouchTunes broke down their data into a handful of different categories this year, including which new releases from each genre were the most played, which catalog songs from each genre were the most played, and which female and male artists were selected the most, just to name a few.
Country music was well represented in this year’s data, as it was the second-largest genre played across TouchTunes. 24% of selected songs were country music. On the male artist chart, country music musicians dominated the top ten, taking the top six spots. Your TouchTunes most-played artist in 2024 is….drum roll, please… Morgan Wallen.
Given Morgan Wallen’s year, this is not shocking to me. The CMA Entertainer of the Year had a career-high year, being named the only artist to ever have five number-one singles in one year on the Apple Airplay charts.
Wallen is in good company with Zach Bryan, Toby Keith, Chris Stapleton, Luke Combs, and Jelly Roll coming after him on the end-of-year rankings. That’s a lot of good country music. After Drake is listed in the number seven spot for most played, it goes back to country with spot eight going to Post Malone. Shaboozey rounds out the list of top male artists played.
Rounding out the data for the men, TouchTunes announced their JukeBox Awards for the first time, naming Jelly Roll the Artist of the Year. That will be a nice piece of hardware for him to add to the mantle.
On the female side, country music is not nearly as popular, with the only artist on the list being Shania Twain, the tenth most-played artist.
Another interesting piece of data I loved was the Red Clay Strays, and Stephen Wilson Jr. was listed as one of the breakout artists for the year list.
Country music is doing something right, given that classic country, country music superstars, and fresh faces were all found somewhere on this year’s year-end data lists. Coinciding with Spotify’s 2024 Wrapped data, country music is proving it’s well on its way to being the biggest genre.
