John R. Miller Reminds Us We Can Turn It Around In “Motor’s Fried”

Music

Damn, is this John R Miller record good or what?

The gritty, introspective artist released Depreciated a few months ago and it’s been a consistent go to when I need something real and something really fantastic.

One of my favorites is “Motor’s Fried,” which reminds us to not throw the baby out with the bathwater, but in a John R. Miller kind of way. The guitar riff lives rent free in my head and the way he croaks out “Just cause your motor’s fried” is one of my favorite enunciations in a song ever.

The illusory lyrics contradict the simple beat and melody in a way that makes the song super interesting, pretty complex, yet somehow easy to understand.

I don’t know how he did it, but man am I glad he did.

“Nothin’ that’s broken can’t be undone
Even if you’re runnin’ scared and you hate everyone
So if you’re broken all up inside
You gotta find somethin’ to ease your worried mind
Don’t sink the boat just because your motor’s fried.”

If you haven’t yet, give this whole album a listen.

It’s a good one to be a little elevated for if you know what I mean… one of the songs was inspired by an impromptu DMT trip, so you know getting a bit in your head will only improve the experience.

The Fireside Sessions:

A few months back, John joined the guys on the Whiskey Riff Raff podcast.
