There’s a reason why Turnpike Troubadours will go down as one of the best country bands to ever do it.
When you combine the incredible songwriting by Evan Felker and R.C. Edwards, the fiddle of Kyle Nix, and the gorgeous steel guitar from Hank Early, it’s a recipe for perfection.
And as great as their original tunes are, they are more than capable of recording some high quality covers as well. While taking a stroll around YouTube today, I stumbled upon this 10/10 hidden gem.
“Mississippi You’re On My Mind” was originally recorded by Jesse Winchester back in 1974, and has since been covered by the likes of Jerry Jeff Walker, Lucinda Williams, Mac McAnally, and more
However, the song hadn’t been covered much in recent years, until good ol’ Turnpike got their hands on it.
It appears to have been recorded in 2016 as a B-Side bonus track to “Come As You Are,” a song the Oklahoma band recorded for Bruce Robison’s first installment of the kickass The Next Waltz project.
If you’re not familiar, The Next Waltz is a series of compilation records produced by Bruce Robison in his all-analog, straight to tape, recording studio, The Bunker. The 3-volume collection of albums features artists like Turnpike Troubadours, Randy Rogers, Wade Bowen, Hayes Carll, William Clark Green, Carson McHone, Flatland Cavalry, Charley Crockett, and more.
All I can say is… thank God they’re back together.
