The month of Ramadan: The holy month for Muslims this year began at the sighting of the crescent moon on April 2 (in Los Angeles) and ends at the sighting of the next crescent moon on/around May 2. Muslims, who are able, fast during the daylight hours during this ninth month of the Islamic calendar. Muslims are encouraged to read the entire Quran, pray/adding a special night prayer, and to give to charities during the month.
