Marcus King Announces Rick Rubin Produced Album, ‘Mood Swings’

Music

I felt in my bones that this was the year we got a new album from Marcus King, and the news is HERE.

2024 has already blessed us with a new single from King, and today, the new song is followed with major news of King’s newest project and world tour. Marcus King drops the title single off his upcoming album Mood Swings, set for an April 5th release via American/Republic Records.

In support of this new album, produced by the legendary Rick Rubin, King also announced his 2024 headlining tour across North America and Europe.

“Welcome friends to the musical accompaniment to a manic depressive episode, join me in detailing the highs and lows of a love lost and suffering mind. I find peace in knowing I’m not alone in this struggle, and I look forward to doing plenty of healing together in a town near YOU.”

Marcus King takes off the blinders on this album, sharing the highs and lows of struggling with addiction, mental health, and unpacking trauma. “Mood Swings” is the perfect melodic introduction to what we can expect to see on this album.

King has sat on the material in Mood Swings for some time, waiting for the perfect moment to share the raw material.

In the early summer of 2020 I arrived at Shangri-La for my first meeting with my hero, the legend, Mr. Rick Rubin. As soon as Rick & I met it was like a spark in the room! I immediately felt welcomed, appreciated and mutually admired.”

Rubin and King secretly holed up in Italy and Malibu while promoting his last album, Young Blood, recording and producing what would become Mood Swings. This project was different than others for King. In fact, he shared that he was not planning on making the album at all…

“I had an escape route already decided for myself and a backup if that didn’t work.

In the thick of his mental health struggles, King laid it all on the line lyrically when working on the album, noting that:

“There was no hiding behind the guitar at all.”

Letting his prolific songwriting and vocal talent be the front and center of the project. The result? A raw and emotional album that pulls the curtain back on the facade of pretending to be okay, vulnerably sharing his thoughts during the darkest time of his life.

“The track and album title “Mood Swings” is a play on the swinging nature of the material while also referencing my up and down shifts in mood while I was either abusing the wrong substances, in between mood stabilizing meds and anti-psychotics, self-medication on top of that, along with a foot locker FULL of repressed childhood trauma all being taken out on my relationship at the time.”

Through working with Rubin, King learned to use his struggles as creative juice, turning around the trajectory of his life. He shares that this album bears it all and hopes that the vulnerability he shares throughout this project can help others.

“Without this assembly of songs, I don’t think I’d be around. I hope this album can act as a safety blanket, a rescue, or a refuge for anybody struggling with mental health, substance abuse, or relationship issues. That’s what it is for me.”

April 5th can’t come fast enough. I can already tell this is going to be a standout album.

Take a listen to the lead track, “Mood Swings.”

Seeing “Delilah” on this tracklist makes my heart sing. Marcus’ wife, Briley, shared the sweetest video of the song on her social media last year, and fans (including myself) have been begging for its release. King has already taken the track on the road as well, lighting up the room with the ballad.
