Doja Cat Shares Release Date For New Single ‘Masc’

The record, out April 5, will mark the rapper and singer’s first release since her recent album Scarlet arrived last year

When Doja Cat released Scarlet in October 2023, the album functioned as an introduction to the new Doja: the one who put her fans to the ultimate loyalty test and shifted her focus towards the ones who stood by her side. It was also the Doja who discarded her past releases Planet Her and Hot Pink as cash grabs that a foolish pop audience fell for. Still, the general public latched onto Scarlet singles “Paint the Town Red” and “Agora Hills” as though not much had changed at all. And on April 5, Doja Cat will offer up another release: “Masc.”

The rapper and singer teased the new single on Instagram, sharing a brief snippet of the melodic tune. “Boy, we’re way too grown for this shit,” she croons in the clip. The fed up snide of the lyric contrasts with the danger-defying romance Doja Cat presented across Scarlet. But if there’s more to the story, the deluxe version of the album is the best place to continue the narrative.

In February, Doja Cat teased the upcoming extended edition of Scarlet, though an official release date has not been set. In an interview on the Therapy Gecko podcast, the rapper revealed that the extension will be titled S2: Clause Frollo, in reference to the antagonist in The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

“I feel like it connects to the story of Scarlet in some degree and if you look up his personality traits and who he is and his story, you’ll understand the whole connection. There’s a control aspect — he just abuses his power and his control,” she explained. “There’s nothing anything very personal happening to me with one person. Claude Frollo doesn’t depict a single person in my life. It’s like a metaphor for the people that creatives endure on a daily basis.”

In an Instagram Story shared in February, Doja Cat shared the potential S2 track list, which featured “Masc” as well as unreleased songs titled “Acknowledge Me,” “Headhigh,” “Gang,” “Rider,” “Urrrge!!!!” and “Hungry.”
