Riley Green Delivers Super Country Cover Of Tom Petty’s Classic, “Mary Jane’s Last Dance”

Tom Petty, but make it really dang country.

While he was on tour in Australia earlier this year, Riley Green recorded a cover of Tom Petty’s classic “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” for iHeartCountry Australia’s Countrified Session, and he of course put it his flawless Alabama twang on it.

“Mary Jane’s Last Dance” was written by Tom Petty and recorded by his band Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and it was recorded while Petty was recording his Wildflowers album. It of course went on to be a huge hit, rising to #14 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, becoming Petty’s first Billboard top-20 hit of the 1990s, and also topped the Billboard Album Rock Tracks chart for two weeks.

It’s been covered by tons of artists over the decades, it’s an all-time rock classic, and it’s always fun to hear a country take on such a popular song. Honestly, I’ve rarely ever heard Riley do covers outside of country, so that’s a fun element of it too. Of course, he kept it simple with the production, strumming a simple acoustic guitar himself, and the rest of his band backed him with simple instruments too that also gave it a very country feel.

Riley just kicked off the American leg of his Cowboy As It Gets 2026 tour, and if you’re not going to catch him out on the road, you can see him on your TV screen for the next several weeks as he plays Garrett on the Yellowstone spinoff Marshals.

He made his acting debut on the episode last weekend, and he did a really solid job considering it’s his first ever professional acting gig, aside from a few music videos here and there. On the episode tomorrow night, Riley will perform his newly-released song “My Way” which will be really fun to see.

But until then, you can check out his very country cover of “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” here:
