  • A movie based on Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Django/Zorro’ comic story is in the works.
  • Brian Helgeland will write the script.
  • Sony is backing the project.

Quentin Tarantino may not be looking to make sequels to his classic movies, but he isn’t stopping others from taking a crack –– witness the Cliff Booth film on the way (more on that below).

And now one of his own continuations –– 2014’s ‘Django/Zorro’, which Tarantino wrote with Matt Wagner, is back in consideration as a movie featuring the character from his ‘Django Unchained’, with ‘Mystic River’s Brian Helgeland writing the script for Sony.

Django/Zorro

Deadline reports that Tarantino has given the project his blessing, with Helgeland at work on a story that continues the tale begun by the comic.

What’s the story of ‘Django/Zorro’?

In the 7-issue comic, Django continued to track despicable prey as bounty hunter, and developed a kinship with Don Diego de la Vega, who was played by Anthony Hopkins in the 1998 movie ‘The Mask of Zorro’, where Don Diego passed on the Zorro mantle to Alejandro Murrieta (Antonio Banderas).

The new script will reportedly focus on a younger Zorro. While a movie was mentioned as being in the works back in 2019, momentum petered out during the pandemic, but it’s moving forward in early development again.

While we’ve yet to learn exactly what the filmmaker might choose as his tenth and, according to his repeated sentiments final, movie, there is plenty going on in QT world.

David Fincher is putting the finishing touches to the aforementioned Cliff Booth/‘Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood’ follow-up, but Tarantino’s focus is currently on stage play ‘The Popinjay Cavalier’, headed for a London premiere early next year.
