California

A North Hollywood man was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of murder following a hit-and-run crash in Van Nuys that left a pedestrian dead, according to police.

The collision occurred around 10:25 p.m. Monday, when a white Mercedes traveling southbound on Van Nuys Boulevard approached Sherman Way at an unsafe speed and struck a pedestrian who was crossing in a marked crosswalk, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

Authorities reported that the impact threw the pedestrian, believed to be around 30 years old, in a southwest direction before he landed on the roadway. The driver fled the scene but was located a short time later and taken into custody without incident.

Police identified the suspect as 40-year-old Jose Maranon.

Investigators determined that Maranon was driving at an unsafe speed and under the influence at the time of the crash. He was booked at Van Nuys Jail on one count of murder, with bail set at $2 million.

Paramedics with the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the scene and pronounced the pedestrian dead. His name has not been released pending notification of next of kin.

Anyone with information about the collision is urged to contact Valley Traffic Division Detective Barragan at (818) 644-8028.
