Pasadena police release body cam footage of shootout – NBC Los Angeles

California

Officer-worn body camera footage from the deadly shooting of a man who Pasadena police say attempted to sexually assault a woman and shot a man who tried to help her earlier this year has been shared with the public.

The Pasadena Police Department on Friday shared several videos related to the officer-involved shooting that took place on March 2.

That night, police were called to the Sierra Madre Villa Metro station for a report of a man shot. Body cam footage from one officer showed a man sitting on the ground, bleeding. The officer could be heard describing the man as “bleeding profusely from his right shoulder” as she called for medical assistance to treat the man. The officer also spoke with a woman who said the injured man tried to help her after another man grabbed and tried to sexually assault her.

After getting a description of the gunman, officers located a man who matched that description a few blocks north near Electronic Drive and Sierra Madre Villa Avenue.

Body camera footage from one officer showed him trying to get the man to drop a bag he was holding. The man refused to comply with the demand and ran away, prompting the officer to chase him on foot. During the chase, the man turned around and opened fire on the officer, and the officer returned fire.

Struck by the gunfire, the officer falls to the ground and reports on his radio that an officer is down. Footage from a second officer’s body camera captured the shootout since the second officer was trailing behind the first officer and the suspect.

The suspect, who was identified as 32-year-old Malcolm Buchanan of Pasadena, ultimately died at the scene. Law enforcement said Buchanan was on active parole for armed robbery. The injured officer, whose name was not released, was shot in the right leg and taken to Huntington Hospital.
