A man arrested in Mexico was extradited to the U.S. to face a murder charge in connection with a deadly freeway shooting in Boyle Heights nearly two years ago, officials said Thursday.

The shooting that happened on the 5 Freeway near Lorena Avenue on Oct. 10, 2024, left one man dead and another injured, according to the California Highway Patrol. The man who died was 29-year-old Encarnacion Escobedo, authorities said.

The suspects took off and were later identified as 21-year-old Christian Rojas of Bellflower and 47-year-old Joshua Rojas Sr. of Downey, the CHP said. The latter was arrested in San Bernardino nearly two weeks after the shooting and remains in custody awaiting trial.

Investigators say they learned Christian Rojas was hiding in Mexico and issued a $4.3 million bail warrant for his arrest. The CHP sought assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service, which worked with Mexican state police to find him.

Christian Rojas was arrested in Palomo de Arriba, Mexico, on Tuesday and was taken to the U.S., where he was booked into jail on the active warrant, authorities said.
