Fans who haven’t been able to secure tickets to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and Paralympics will soon have another option to experience one of the biggest sporting events in the world. Instead of sitting in the stands, they’ll be behind the scenes.
Organizers announced Monday they are planning to open applications for the LA28 Volunteer Crew on July 14, exactly two years before the Olympics Opening Ceremony is scheduled to take place.
Around 60,000 people are expected to be part of the crew for both the Olympic and Paralympic Games, according to LA28 officials. The volunteer period for the Olympics runs from March through August of 2028, followed by the period for the Paralympics from August to September.
Volunteers are needed for a variety of tasks. Some are more general, like welcoming athletes and ushering attendees, while others are more specialized, such as providing medical assistance or helping with language translation, organizers said.
“Volunteers are the backbone of the Games,” LA28 chief executive officer Reynold Hoover said in a news release. “They are a friendly face who helps welcome the world, create memorable experiences and bring the Olympic and Paralympic spirit to life.”
Most volunteer opportunities will be in the greater Los Angeles area, but officials say support is also needed at events in Oklahoma City; New York; Columbus, Ohio; Nashville, Tennessee; St. Louis; San Jose, California; and San Diego.
Those who apply can indicate a preferred location, as well as any skills that might make them a good candidate for a specialized role.
According to LA28 officials, each volunteer will be required to complete at least 10 shifts within a period.
Fans can express their interest in volunteering on LA28’s website. More details were expected to be released in the coming weeks.
How to get tickets to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics
Whether you didn’t register for the first drop, weren’t selected or didn’t purchase your ticket maximums, you will have another chance to lock in your spot when the second ticket draw kicks off this summer.
Free registration for “Drop 2” is open through July 22, and tickets are scheduled to go on sale from Aug. 10-20. Those randomly selected will be notified about their time slot through email sometime between Aug. 6 and 7. Across all the presales and drops, fans can buy up to 12 tickets for Olympic events (which includes a four-ticket limit for the Opening Ceremony and Closing Ceremony), in addition to 12 soccer tournament tickets.
Fans only need to register one time to be included in future ticket draws, including for the Paralympic draws slated for 2027. Those who didn’t receive a time slot during the first phase were automatically entered for the Drop 2 draw.
Global sales for LA28 Olympic tickets are underway after local presales and concerns about ticket prices. Lolita Lopez reports for NBC4 at 5 p.m. on April 9, 2026.
More than 4 million tickets were purchased worldwide during the first phase of sales, LA28 officials said. Organizers say the second drop will offer tickets at different prices across all Olympic sports.
Another option fans have to get tickets is through a verified ticket resale program that LA28 is expected to roll out in 2027.
In 2028, LA will become the third city to have hosted three Olympic Games, following the Games in 1932 and 1984. It will be the city’s first time hosting the Paralympic Games.
LA28 will feature 36 sports across more than 40 venues, including iconic landmarks like the LA Memorial Coliseum in Exposition Park and Pasadena’s Rose Bowl, as well as modern venues, such as BMO Stadium, SoFi Stadium and Intuit Dome. The city is not expecting to build any new permanent venues.
