Wheeler Walker Jr. Is Dealing With Things The Best Way He Knows How In Relatable New Anthem, “Waiting For The Drugs To Kick In”

Music

Aren’t we all?

Wheeler Walker Jr. is gearing up to drop his final album, Pullin’ Out, after recently announcing his retirement from country music.

One of the greatest artists of our generation (or maybe any generation), Wheeler has spent a decade fighting back against bro country and the Nashville machine, but recently announced that he was hanging it up:

“I can’t do this anymore. Every song in Nashville is written by twelve idiots named Chase about trucks they don’t own and farms they never worked on. I really don’t wanna be around when country music becomes fully AI, which sadly will be better than most of the crap they’re putting out now.”

Can’t blame him there.

So how is Wheeler coping with his pending retirement? Well, the same way all of us are dealing with the world that’s burning down around us: He’s just waiting for the drugs to kick in.

The country music legend dropped “Waiting For the Drugs To Kick In” today, the next song from his upcoming farewell album. And the song is an instantly relatable tune about dealing with the pressures of everyday life:

“My whole life is full of sin
And the whole world is full of sh-t
So I’m sittin’ here waitin’ for the drugs to kick in”

Poetry.

Speaking on the song, Wheeler said it’s simply an ode to his favorite coping mechanism:

“Honestly, the world’s on fire, everybody’s annoying, and sometimes you really are just waiting for the drugs to kick in.”

Amen.

Along with the song, Wheeler also dropped a brand new music video that would no doubt dominate the airwaves if CMT still played anything other than reruns of Last Man Standing.

It’s this kind of raw honesty that country music is going to miss most when Wheeler hangs it up. He’s made his career with authentic storytelling that’s missing from so much of country music today, with songs like “F— You B—h,” “F—ed By A Country Boy,” “Eatin’ P—y/Kickin’ A–,” “Anal & the Dishes,” “Redneck S—” and so many others.

But given the state of the world – and country music – today, this might just be his most relatable song yet.
