Bees, Quarks, Pop Stars, Empires, and the Big Bang — One Mind Sees the Pattern Running Through It All
We live in the age of the specialist. The physicist doesn’t talk to the biologist, the biologist doesn’t talk to the historian, and none of them would be caught dead analyzing a pop concert. Human knowledge has been carved into ten thousand disconnected territories, each guarded by experts who know more and more about less and less. And then there is Howard Bloom — the thinker Britain’s Channel4 TV placed in the lineage of Newton, Darwin, Einstein, and Freud — who committed the ultimate intellectual heresy. He declared that it is all one field. He calls that field “mass behavior,” and it stretches, in his own formulation, from the mass behavior of quarks to the mass behavior of human beings. In other words: everything.
It sounds impossible until you watch him do it. Bloom looks at a hive of bees conducting collective brainwork, a swarm of subatomic particles organizing themselves into matter, and a stadium full of screaming fans — and he sees the same elemental forces at work: the drive for attention, for communication, for connection, for a place in something larger. Insects, particles, and pop stars, he argues, are all playing versions of the same cosmic game. Where the rest of the intellectual world sees separate subjects, Bloom sees one continuous story that began in the first instant of the Big Bang and is still being written in your brain right now. His two rules of science explain the method: find the truth at any price, even your life — and look at the things right under your nose as if you have never seen them before.
His books are that vision made flesh, and each one detonated in a different discipline. The Lucifer Principle — called mesmerizing by The Washington Post — reread human history through the lens of biology and superorganisms. Global Braintraced the evolution of a collective mass mind from the Big Bang to the internet age, and so unsettled the establishment that the Office of the Secretary of Defense convened a symposium on it, drawing thinkers from the State Department, DARPA, IBM, and MIT. The Genius of the Beast radically re-visioned capitalism. The God Problem asked how a godless cosmos creates — and answered. Evolutionary biologist David Sloan Wilson observed that Bloom has “raced ahead of the timid scientific herd” — praise from precisely the kind of credentialed insider who is supposed to resent outsiders like him.
And Bloom institutionalized his connective vision. In 1997 he founded an entirely new discipline, paleopsychology, with a mandate breathtaking in scope: to map the evolution of complexity, sociality, perception, and thought from the first fraction of a second of the Big Bang to the present — and he populated it with physicists, psychologists, microbiologists, paleontologists, entomologists, and neuroscientists who would otherwise never share a room. His scientific work has appeared everywhere from arxiv.org, the leading preprint site in theoretical physics, to NASA’s Cosmos and Culture. He has lectured an international conference of quantum physicists in Moscow on why everything we know about quantum physics is wrong — and had his concepts adopted in a subsequent book on constructive physics. The specialists guard their territories; Bloom keeps getting invited inside all of them.
The connecting has never stopped. Through the Space Development Steering Committee — whose ranks have included Buzz Aldrin and moonwalker Edgar Mitchell — and his current work with Caltech’s Keck Institute for Space Studies on multi-planetary missions and a solar-system energy infrastructure, Bloom is now linking humanity’s oldest story to its next chapter: the leap off-planet.
