Residents in West Hollywood, particularly those with pets, are on high alert after a pack of coyotes has seemingly taken residence at the site of an abandoned construction project.
“Coyote Condo” is home to several coyotes who’ve taken over an abandoned construction site near the intersection of Romaine Street and North Spaulding Avenue. The bones of what was supposed to be an apartment complex are now an open-air residence for the pack of wild animals.
“We call it the West Hollywood Zoo and we’re thinking about charging tickets,” Paddy Fallon, who lives in the community, joked.
Cindy Sorlay, another West Hollywood resident, said she’s encountered her furry neighbors at night after parking her car.
“I just kind of went, ‘Shh, shh,’ and kind of got them out of the way,” she said. “They did move and then I was able to walk into my place.”
The city said it’s aware of the coyotes’ residence.
“The City of West Hollywood has had a comprehensive Coyote Management and Coexistence Plan in place since 2018,” it said in a statement. “The plan emphasizes public education, prevention, and humane coexistence strategies, including guidance on safely hazing coyotes that exhibit habituated behavior. The City’s approach prioritizes non-lethal management techniques and ongoing public outreach while working closely with Los Angeles County agencies to monitor coyote activity.”
