He’s had some mega hit love songs… but some of the best ones aren’t the ones you’ll hear on the radio.
Over the years, Kip Moore has consistently puts out stellar albums, and despite being truly one of the most talented artists in mainstream country in terms of his vocals and songwriting prowess, he has remained of the most underrated artists in country in my humble opinion. He just put out his released his seventh studio album Reason to Believe in May, and it was another impressive project, which finds him reflecting on grief, resilience, faith and hope.
He’s a go-to for me, an artist I always find my way back to, even if months have gone by and I haven’t pulled up one of his albums… the songs are timeless, he has such a cool sound blending heartland rock and country that’s enhanced by his soulful lyricism, raspy vocals, electric guitars here and there, and of course, brilliant storytelling.
Part of it is probably nostalgia… I found Kip’s music, like many fans, when he released his 2012 major label debut Up All Night, which featured hit singles “Somethin’ ‘Bout a Truck,” “Beer Money,” and “Hey Pretty Girl”, and the album as a whole is SO underrated… I can never listen to “Crazy One More Time” enough. Since then, I’ve been a huge fan, and his evolution as an artist over the years has been thoroughly entertaining and really interesting, because you never really know what to fully expect from him.
Of course, he has plenty of songs about heartbreak, life, and some of his biggest, most popular and recognizable hits like “Hey Pretty Girl,” “More Girls Like You” and “Last Shot,” are just gorgeous love songs, ones most country fans know and love. They put him on the map and launched his career, and they’re absolutely beautiful songs and there’s a reason they were such big hits.
But I think he actually has a handful of super underrated love songs that the casual fan may not know, and I have been thinking about them recently because one of my best friends is getting married soon, and we’ve been trying to get all of the music right for the ceremony and reception. I was at her house the other week, and we had lots of wedding things to get done, and on my drive back, one of my all-time favorite Kip Moore love songs came on my shuffle, which is on this list, and I couldn’t help but think about how there are so many good ones people just don’t know if they simply listen to the singles or what’s pushed to radio and streaming.
I have always appreciated the variety of topics Kip covers in his music because that’s what keeps it interesting. And while love, and all aspects of it, is certainly a big topic for him, as it is for many country artists, I think we need to put some more respect on the love songs that have remained incredibly underrated deep cuts… and here’s my top 5:
“More Than Enough”
“More Than Enough” was released on Kip’s 2020 fourth studio album, Wild World. This song was written by Kip along with Josh Miller and David Garcia, and it finds him reflecting on how he truly wants to spend time with the woman he loves and enjoy the simple things in life.
The melody is so pretty, and I have often wondered why it didn’t get more attention because it’s such a standout:
“Try Again”
As we all know, love isn’t always easy… in fact, it’s rarely even remotely close to “easy.” “Try Again” was included on Kip’s 2017 Slowheart, also co-written by Kip with David Garcia and Josh Miller, and taps into a different side of love in terms of fighting for it and stepping up to do better when you’ve messed up. Honestly, if you’re new to Kip’s music, I think the entire Slowheart album is a really great place to start to get into his music, because the sound is quintessential Kip in terms of that country sound with a ton of rock edge mixed with top-notch lyricism and beautiful stories.
“Drive Me Crazy”
“Drive Me Crazy” is from Kip’s aforementioned debut Up All Night, which he wrote with Keifer Thompson. This one is not exactly a traditional, wedding dance type of love song, but rather explores the nostalgia of intense young romance that is often fleeting but unforgettable nonetheless.
I’m telling you, there’s just something in this album…
“Tough Enough”
This is such an underrated gem. “Tough Enough” is part of the tracklist from his 2025 album Solitary Tracks, and no pun intended, it stopped me in my tracks when I heard it the first time.
He wrote it with the late Brett James, his longtime friend, co-writer and first producer who tragically passed in a plane crash in September of last year, and it’s an absolute stunner that finds Kip leveling with a girl who seems apprehensive to jump into a relationship, as he assures her he’s “tough enough” to go the long haul with this girl… even if she’s not so convinced he can handle it:
“Reason to Believe”
The most recent song on this list, it’s actually been a fan-favorite for years, and Kip finally gave the fans what they wanted by cutting this one in the studio and making it the title track to his 2026 album after playing it live here and there forever (at least it feels like).
Kip wrote it with Dan Couch and Scott Stepakoff, and he’s noted before that he held off on it for so long because he never felt like he could get it exactly how he wanted it in the studio. But when the aforementioned Brett James passed, Kip decided to revisit it and make it the centerpiece to the record, because it had been one of James’ favorite and what a beautiful way to pay tribute to his friend. It’s another stunner… there’s some songs where you can truly feel every part of what an artist put into it, and this is certainly of his most heartfelt performances:
And the only think better than hearing them on your favorite streaming platform… hearing them live, and Kip will be on the road for a big part of the rest of the year, and I’m hoping to make it to one myself because I’m telling you, his live shows are just beyond.
