Johnny Depp is in talks to appear in a sixth Pirates of the Caribbean film.
On Sunday, August 16, producer Jerry Bruckheimer teased Depp’s return as Captain Jack Sparrow at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in Anaheim, California.
“We’re talking with Johnny,” Bruckheimer, 82, told Deadline. “We’re working on a screenplay, and hopefully we can get this done.”
The sixth film of the Pirates franchise is set to star Margot Robbie as a new character, with screenwriter Christina Hobson tapped to write the tale, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Sources told Deadline that Robbie’s character would be the main protagonist, while Depp would be more of a side character.

In 2003, Depp first starred as Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, starring alongside Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley. The trio reunited for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest in 2006 and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End in 2007.
Neither Bloom nor Knightley appeared in 2001’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides or in 2017’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. Penélope Cruz instead starred alongside Depp in the former, while Javier Bardem, Geoffrey Rush, Brenton Thwaites, and Kaya Scodelario were featured in the latter.
Aside from Depp, two other actors have appeared in all of the Pirates films so far: Geoffrey Rush, who plays Captain Hector Barbossa, and Kevin McNally, who plays Joshamee Gibbs.
A sixth Pirates film was in the works years ago. In 2022, Depp’s former agent testified in court that the actor was axed from the film after his ex-wife, Amber Heard, published an op-ed with domestic violence allegations against him in 2018.
As of writing, a release date for the sixth Pirates film has not been announced.
