Luckily nothing to worry about.
Justin Moore is back on the road and newly sober after stepping away for a 30-day stay in rehab earlier this summer. But as it turns out, that’s not the only health issue he’s been dealing with.
The “Small Town USA” singer joined Tracy Lawrence this week on his TL’s Road House podcast, where he discussed taking control of his health after putting off doctor visits for a while:
“I hadn’t gone to the doctor, up until last year, in probably 10 years. … My grandfathers greatly influenced me, and they were the type that it’s like, if a limb’s hanging off and you’re working, you just kinda tape it back up and go for it, so I was the same way.”
But one of the issues that finally prompted him to seek help was a cancer scare resulting from a growth on his neck:
“I’ve had some health issues. Nothing life-threatening, thankfully. I’ve got a – I don’t know if you can see this on my neck, I’m sure people think, ‘Golly, he’s been eatin’ good.’
We thought it was called a lipoma. But it’s just fat. It’s benign, thank God. And they told me it would be very, very difficult to do surgery, and it may affect my singing, and even my speaking voice.”
Obviously for a singer that’s a problem, but luckily Justin says it doesn’t cause any issues. Well, maybe one:
“It’s weird, it doesn’t affect me, I just look like a linebacker circa 1982, thick neck.”
Justin says that he was initially upset when he was told there was nothing they could do about it, but his wife Kate helped him find perspective on the issue:
“My wife and I were walking out of the hospital when I had an MRI or something and and they had told us, ‘Man, great news. It’s benign, but there’s really not anything we can do about it.’ So I was kind of bummed out walking out of the hospital, cause at the time we didn’t know if it was cancer. We didn’t know what it was, you know, and of course your mind takes you to the worst possible places obviously.
And my wife looked at me, she goes, ‘If you just have a fat neck and you’re here for the next 50 years, then shut up and stop complaining.’”
Could definitely be a lot worse. And Tracy even suggested a way that Justin could use it to his advantage:
“Maybe we could come up with a name, like George Jones was called the Possum because he had beady little eyes. Maybe you can become the Chipmunk or something.”
I mean, maybe there’s something there.
Luckily Justin’s healthy and even revealed during the interview that he’s gearing up to release new music, with four songs already recorded and an album on the way hopefully in the first quarter of 2027. He also announced that he’s got a new song coming soon ahead of the new album, so it’s good to know that he’s got his health issues under control and will hopefully be blessing us with new music for a long time to come.
