Another week, another impressive showing for ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ which earned $22.2 million to rule over the box office for a fifth week as the summer season winds down.
With a running domestic total of $891.5 million, Spidey is now closing in on $900 million, with a $2.33 billion global haul.
But perhaps the bigger story was that of underdog ‘Coyote vs. Acme,’ which was scheduled for a tax write-off by Warner Bros. before indie distributors Ketchup Entertainment paid $50 million to buy it, and has now seen it succeed in a summer slot with a fraction of the marketing enjoyed by big studio competition. It landed in second with $15.4 million.

What else happened at the box office this weekend?
While ‘Coyote’ proved that underdogs can succeed, Ridley Scott’s ‘The Dog Stars’ seemed more lame than galactic, limping into fifth place in its first weekend. The post-apocalyptic dramatic thriller could only post $8 million, among his worst debuts.
‘The Odyssey’ clung to third via $14.6 million, while fellow holdover ‘Insidious: Out of the Further’ slipped to fourth on $9.3 million, a 72% drop from its launch.
