It sounds like Carrie Underwood has a rock album on the way.
It’s no secret that the country star always been a fan of rock and roll, and we’ve seen her perform with several iconic rock acts over the years including teaming up with Guns N’ Roses frontman Axl Rose for a performance during her headlining set at Stagecoach in 2022, and she later surprised fans at one of their shows in London to sing with the whole band. She also covered their hit “Welcome to the Jungle” to kickoff this tour, and crushed a drum solo of her original song “Poor Everybody Else.”
Just a couple weeks ago, she covered Limp Bizkit, and this past weekend, she surprised fans in Atlanta at the Guns N Roses show at Truist Park for their performance of “Paradise City,” which she shared photos of on Instagram.
Carrie shared photos from the show thanking them for letting her join them on stage:
“Yet another amazing show from Guns N’ Roses …this time in Atlanta at Truist Park!
Thanks, Axl Rose, Duff McKagan, Slash… and the whole crew for having us and for letting me try and keep up on stage! You are always so kind! Love you all forever!”
Carrie previously spoke to Audacy about how she wouldn’t be opposed to making a rock album, which honestly wouldn’t be as surprising as it sounds, and I think fans have learned over the years by seeing her sing these songs that she has a genuine love for the genre that could translate into an actual rock project one day.
She said that putting out a full on rock album one day isn’t totally out of the question:
“You never really know with me. I never say never about anything. I feel like certain influences work their way into different songs and different moments, even if they’re not songs that I record.”
Carrie added that she grew up with tons of different musical influences, and she has an “affinity” for rock and metal music specifically:
“I grew up listening to everything. I do have an affinity for rock music and metal, and I just love the energy more than anything. I love going to rock concerts because it feels like freedom to me.”
And it sounds like she’s following through, as TMZ reports that Carrie showing up at the Guns N’ Roses show wasn’t just because she’s a fan of their music, because apparently, sources tell them Axl Rose is helping her with making some rock music,
Of course, there is no confirmation from Carrie herself yet, and it’s unclear if this is going to be an EP of some sort, or a full-blown album… maybe it will just be a one-off single if it’s even happening at all.
I’ve said for years that I would actually love for Carrie to really go there and immerse herself fully into rock, because she has such a passion for it and vocally, she can do anything. Of course, it would be totally outside of her country wheelhouse, but I am highly intrigued and I would love to hear what she would come up with. When she went full gospel with her 2021 My Savior album, she ended up winning the Grammy Award for Best Roots Gospel Album in 2022.
Obviously, rock is a far cry from gospel, but Carrie is a versatile artist, we all know she’s incredibly talented, and I think she’s at the point in her career where she’s earned the right to take risks and do these kinds of things with her her music. Plus, if she is getting mentored by Rose, she has the right idea, I think.
