Opening in theaters on October 2nd is the new comedy ‘Rolling Loud: The Movie’, which was written directed by Jeremy Garelick (‘Murder Mystery 2‘). The film is based on a real experience Garelick had with his son and was shot on location at the Miami and Atlanta Rolling Loud music festivals.

The film stars Owen Wilson (‘Runner‘), Matt Rife (‘I Live Here Now‘), Christine Ko (‘Tigertail‘), Christian Convery (‘Frankenstein‘), and Henry Winkler (‘Normal‘), as well as musicians Sexyy Red, Ty Dolla Sign, and Travis Scott.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Owen Wilson and Matt Rife about their work on ‘Rolling Loud: The Movie’, their first reaction to the screenplay, shooting at the festival, performing with Travis Scott, and working with director Jeremy Garelick.

Moviefone: To begin with, Owen, what was your first reaction to the screenplay and the idea of shooting at the real Rolling Loud. Were you aware of the festival before reading the script?

Owen Wilson: No, I didn’t know the festival. Even sort of reading the script, I would say it was more meeting Jeremy, the director and writer, and listening to him talk about it. That’s what got me excited about it.

MF: Matt, what was it like working with director Jeremy Garelick and shooting at the Rolling Loud Festival?

Matt Rife: It was really cool. This was my first movie of this pedigree and size, and I know it’s so uncommon for anything of this size to be shot at location. Most things would be green screen or shot on a sound stage, which I mean, some of it was. But, it was a very unique experience to get to be there in these live crowds, literally doing takes in the middle of an active mosh pit, which I think helped. It made it pretty easy to act because the fear was real. It was such an authentic experience and it’s something that’s so rare that people really get a chance to do. So I feel pretty fortunate for getting to have learned from that. It was easy to match the tone because we were at the real thing. We know where we were coming from.

MF: Owen, as an actor, what was your experience like working this way?

OW: It was exciting being in Miami, being at the actual concert. No wonder my kids are so into this because it is unbelievable, the energy and stuff. Then we also shot in Atlanta and we tried to recreate some of that in the back lot. I was happy that we got to shoot at the real concert because sometimes when we’re shooting, it’s like, “Okay, now you’re running around this corner and now you’re running back here.” And we’ve only got this little stretch to work on. But there was one time I do remember where it was like, “How’s this going to look like us running in here and then running back?” I think there were challenges shooting sometimes on the green screen or on this little block and a half Rolling Loud concession stand mock up that we did.

MF: Owen, what was it like working with Travis Scott and performing on stage with him at Rolling Loud? Were you able to rehearse that scene before you shot it in front a an audience?

OW: Well, we didn’t have any rehearsal time for when I got up on stage, but we did speak on the phone before that. He was in Houston and he said he’s a big fan of Wes Anderson and the first movie that we worked on ‘Bottle Rocket‘, which hardly anybody saw. So that was nice to get a shout-out from Travis on that movie.

MF: Finally, Matt, can you talk about the friendship that forms between Hank, Terry and Linda and finding that comedic tone with Owen and Christine?

MR: The tones were really easy to find, honestly. The chemistry came pretty organically and pretty quick. It didn’t take us a couple of days to warm up. We kind of all gelled pretty quickly together, I felt like. They’re all three such different personalities. We’re dealing with somebody who’s dealing with an active crisis, somebody who this is the best weekend of their life, regardless of a missing child, and then somebody who’s just kind of there to help out and do the right thing. I think you take the three of those together and you find a Venn diagram of chaos that worked out in the funniest way possible.
