Woman pulled into water drowns amid high surf in Malibu – NBC Los Angeles

California

A woman drowned Wednesday in Malibu after she and a man were pulled into the water amid high surf near the Sycamore Canyon Campground, officials said.

The tragedy was reported at about 11:45 a.m. after a man and woman seated on the rocks of the beach across the campground were swept by high surf. The Ventura County Sheriff’s Department said a large wave pulled the two into the water.

Both individuals struggled in the water for several minutes before the man was able to pull himself and the woman out. He then called 911.

CPR was performed on the woman by paramedics since she was unresponsive. Ultimately, she died at the scene.

The man was taken to a nearby hospital in moderate condition and is expected to survive.

The relationship between the man and the woman is unclear. Her death was deemed not suspicious and there was no evidence of foul play.

Officials said the woman’s name is being withheld while they notify her family.
