Two suspects were arrested Friday after police uncovered a large and complex illegal synthetic drug manufacturing lab in Santa Fe Springs, authorities said.
Whittier police officers responded at about 2:10 p.m. to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon involving a vehicle and a hit-and-run in the 9600 block of Santa Fe Springs Road. Fire personnel were already at the scene investigating a suspicious odor.
Officers soon located the suspect vehicle in the parking lot of Presbyterian Inter-Community Hospital in Whittier.
Authorities took one suspect into custody after an extensive search of the area.
The investigation led officers to an industrial building at 9620 Santa Fe Springs Road, where they found what they described as a large and complex illegal chemical drug manufacturing lab.
During the investigation, officers arrested a second suspect.
A specialized task force was called in to identify the chemicals and dismantle the lab.
Authorities said the dismantling operation remained ongoing.
