
One person was killed Tuesday in a collision involving a motorist driving a black sedan the wrong way on the 405 Freeway in Hawthorne.
The motorist was reported driving southbound at 80 mph in northbound lanes at 12:49 a.m. around Imperial Highway, according to the California Highway Patrol.
An officer reported at 12:50 a.m. that there was a collision just south of Rosecrans Avenue leaving one vehicle in the HOV lane and one on the right shoulder catching fire, according to the CHP’s online log.
One person was pronounced dead at the scene, the CHP said.
Video from the scene showed the wreckage of one vehicle on the right shoulder and at least two damaged vehicles on the roadside. It also showed an ambulance with red lights flashing leaving the scene.
A Sigalert was issued at 1:03 a.m. shutting down all northbound lanes of the San Diego Freeway with traffic diverted off at Inglewood Avenue.
The CHP reopened the HOV lane and lanes 1 and 2 at about 4 a.m., keeping right lanes closed. The Sigalert was cancelled at about 5:20 a.m.
