It’s a hit.
Kacey Musgraves scored her first-ever Billboard top 40 solo hit on the Hot 100 with her song “Mexico Honey,” which was included on her recent album Middle Of Nowhere. For an artist that has put out as much great music as she has over the years, it’s hard to believe this is the first time she’s charted so high on this chart, but it’s certainly well-deserved and I hope it just keeps climbing.
It reach a new peak of 40 this week, making it officially a minor crossover hit and hopefully it will go far beyond that:

Kacey previously debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 alongside Zach Bryan with their duet “I Remember Everything” in 2023, marking the first career Hot 100 number-one and chart debut for both artists.
Of course, “Mexico Honey” tackles some very different subject matter, and Kacey wrote it with Luke Laird and Steph Jones, which features a ton of Spanish influence with the melody. The song’s tone is set from the first line, as Musgraves describes a sexy cowboy Casanova who has captured her heart.
Instead of going out as the two intended, they turn the car around and get acquainted with one another in a different way… if you’re picking up what I’m putting down:
“You’re goin’ down smooth like Mexico, honey
Take my heart, take all my money
I want you so bad, it ain’t even funny
I mean for real, what the hell
You got me shakin’ my ass in my hot-pink shorts
You’re layin’ down laughin’ on the bathroom floor
Oh, I dropped it down, you said you’ll stay
We’re gonna ride this wave ’til it breaks, yeah.”
The song is beyond catchy, a little saucy, and perfectly wraps up the self-discovery that Musgraves has throughout this record that it’s okay to be alone… but it’s also fun to have some pleasure in your life. Unlike “Dry Spell,” she’s embracing this area of her life and it very quickly became a fan-favorite on the Middle of Nowhere tracklist, as you can tell.
And the music video did not disappoint, either. Kacey brings all of the sultry edge and intimate lines to life, as you see very intimate shots of her with her honey, if you will, and she even bares it all while holding a parrot, which is just the most Kacey thing I’ve ever seen.
Filmed on location in Mexico, the video was directed by Running Bear (Alexa Stone and Stephen Kinigopoulos), as Kacey not only brings the song to life, but she also pays tribute to the captivatingly beautiful country of Mexico and the passion and experiences that have inspired her there, which is also a bit of a theme on the album as a whole.
Kacey and her music video co-star have some very natural chemistry, and while it’s definitely sexy and intimate, it also feels tasteful and artistic, a fine line that they captured so perfectly here. If Kacey was ever in a dry spell, you wouldn’t know it watching this:
