The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department detective, who was shot during a gunfight with a man in the Antelope Valley, is recovering from surgery, authorities said Thursday.
The detective’s emergency surgery was successfully, and he’s not recovering from Antelope Valley Hospital, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.
The LA County Sheriff’s Department is leading the investigation into the shooting, which happened in Littlerock, in southeast Antelope Valley within LA County. An LA County Sheriff’s Department helicopter transported the detective to the hospital after he was airlifted from the scene of the shooting.
San Bernardino County authorities said Thursday that the detective is expected to be released from the hospital in the near future.
“He was shot just below the lower rib cage. He is in stable condition. He’s receiving top notch medical care at the Antelope Valley medical center,” San Bernardino County Sheriff Shannon Dicus said Wednesday shortly after the shooting. “That’s going to be for internal injuries he’s received, but again, he’s in stable condition.”
The shooting occurred at around 3:10 p.m. at what appeared to be a junkyard near Avenue R and 130th Street East in Littlerock, a remote part of the Antelope Valley. The detectives and other deputies were there Wednesday afternoon when they confronted a man driving a white Cadillac Escalade.
NewsChopper4 was overhead when it captured the images of the Escalade stopped on a pile of dirt and rocks with its front driver and rear passenger windows shattered.
The man who was killed in the shooting was not identified as of Thursday afternoon.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna told reporters at a Wednesday evening news conference that San Bernardino County deputies were attempting to serve a warrant when an exchange of gunfire occurred, and the detective was struck.
Luna said investigators were continuing to determine whether a search warrant had been executed, as the investigation remained in its preliminary stages.
