Riverside County sheriff’s deputies shoot person in Moreno Valley – NBC Los Angeles

California

A person was in critical condition Friday after being shot by Riverside County Sheriff’s deputies in Moreno Valley, authorities said.

Deputies responded to a report about someone experiencing a mental health crisis at a home on Villa Hermosa just after 4 p.m., according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

When deputies arrived, they — alongside a clinical therapist with the county’s Community Behavioral Assessment Team — spoke with the person who made the report outside, the department said.

Officials say during that conversation, the person believed to be experiencing the crisis came out of the home and pointed a gun at deputies, prompting deputies to shoot. It’s unclear if more than one deputy fired shots.

The individual was hit by gunfire and taken to a hospital in critical condition, according to the sheriff’s department. No deputies were hurt.

Authorities have not released the identities of the person shot and the deputies involved in the shooting.

The department said the deputies involved will be placed on paid administrative leave, in accordance with its policy.

The investigation is ongoing.
