Two people were found dead inside a McLaren that caught fire after it crashed into a tree in Irvine early Saturday morning, police said.
Officers and the Orange County Fire Authority responded to the single-vehicle crash at Culver Drive and Deerfield Avenue after it was reported around 12:20 a.m., according to the Irvine Police Department.
Police say the preliminary investigation indicates that the 2019 sports car stopped at the light and then traveled northbound at a high rate of speed when it turned green. The driver lost control and hit a curb and tree before the car split in two and caught fire, according to the department.
The names of the two people who died have not been released. Details about them, including their ages, were not immediately available.
The investigation is ongoing.
