Christopher Nolan’s epic The Odyssey is coming home, and fortunately for movie fans, it didn’t take 10 years. The film will hit video-on-demand platforms and get a Blu-ray release on Nov. 17, exactly four months after its U.S. theatrical release.
The release was first announced in August, but we now have more details about what’s for sale. In addition to the 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD releases, the film will be released as a collectible Steelbook and a collectible $300 three-disc set. Both the collectible set and the Steelbook have sold out since landing online. It will also be available to buy or rent on digital the same day.
No streaming date has been announced, although as a Universal Pictures release, the film is expected to eventually land on Peacock.
Based on Homer’s 2,700-year-old epic poem of the same name, The Odyssey follows Odysseus (Matt Damon) as he tries to return home to Ithaca after fighting in the Trojan War. In true Nolan fashion, the film bounces around the timeline rather than following a straightforward narrative. In addition to Damon, the film stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, and Lupita Nyong’o.
The Odyssey topped the already high box-office bar set by Nolan’s previous movies, raking in more than $1.7 billion worldwide against a $250 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo. A significant chunk of that revenue came from IMAX screens, the premium large-scale format that The Odyssey was filmed for.
“Once you’ve stepped into this film and let it sweep you up, however, it’s hard to deny the accomplishment that he’s brought to the screen,” wrote Rolling Stone film critic David Fear in his review. “You may have no idea how long you’ve been gone after you’ve seen it. You just know that you want to go back again.”
