A new tiny home village in Sun Valley opened Monday, providing interim shelter for more than 200 Los Angeles residents attempting to transition out of homelessness.
The project is part of a larger plan to build more than 500 tiny homes across the city, according to Mayor Karen Bass.
Bass, City Councilwoman Imelda Padilla, who represents parts of Sun Valley, and members of the nonprofit Hope the Mission organized a news conference Monday morning to showcase the new site, located at the Sun Valley Metro Link Station, 11080 Olinda St.
“Leveraging tiny homes as interim housing is a key part of our strategy to reduce the cost of Inside Safe and move away from housing homeless Angelenos in motels as we work to expedite the building of permanent housing across L.A.,” Bass said in a statement.
“With hundreds of tiny homes now online and hundreds more under construction, we’ll continue implementing innovative, cost-effective solutions to expand our ability to bring people in off the street,” Bass added.
The site has 84 units available with a total of 208 beds for unhoused people. While the Mayor’s Office did not provide specific costs for the project, officials said funding came from the state. Future tiny home sites in Council Districts 1 and 13 are also being funded by the state.
Residents at the Sun Valley site will not have to pay rent, according to city officials. Tiny home villages serve as temporary, transitional housing, where formerly unhoused people can receive operational services provided by a contractor, such as residential monitoring and security, three meals per day, and case management.
The goal is for participants to find stability and eventually move into permanent housing.
“These tiny homes represent more than shelter; they represent dignity, stability and a real first step toward permanent housing for our unhoused neighbors here in Sun Valley,” Padilla said in a statement.
Hope the Mission is contracted for operational services through LAHSA.
