Come on, you gotta admit they’re pretty funny.
Luke Bryan has seen all of you commenting “Fart goes the butt” on his social media videos – and apparently he’s not a fan.
The whole thing started when Luke teased a song called “Down Goes the Whiskey,” which was included on his most recent album Signs that dropped last week.
Let’s take a look at the lyrics:
“Slam goes the door
Flyin’ goes the dust
Break goes the heart
To the bar goes the truck
Buzz goes the neon
Jukebox goes Whitley
There goes that love up in smoke
And down goes the whiskey”
Well as you can imagine, the comments immediately began roasting the song, with many pointing out that it’s eerily reminiscent of the children’s tune “Pop Goes the Weasel.” But others began suggesting additional lyrics to the song. And the top comment that got the most attention?
“Fart goes the butt”
I’ll be honest, I cried laughing the first time I saw that one, and so far the comment has racked up over 340k likes on TikTok, nearly five times the likes on the video itself. And the joke has spread, with “Fart goes the butt” comments popping up on pretty much everything he posts now.
And Luke confirmed this week that he’s seen the comments – but he’s not exactly laughing with the rest of us.
During an interview on The Rob + Holly Show, Luke was asked about the “fart goes the butt” joke:
“I don’t like it. We’re trying to tease an album to get interest, and you only tease albums with snippets of songs. We’ve got four or five songs that we’ve teased, and then people love ’em on the 30 seconds or 20 seconds that they get to hear and you’ve got positives, and then people… It’s just like, people are all over the map with all this stuff. It’s like, man, if people have time to do all that, whatever.”
Luke goes on to point out the writers behind the song who are also seeing the comments, while also pointing out how easy it is to create a narrative online:
“I’ve been doing music at a high level for 30 years now. When I pick a song for my album, it’s what I want. There are writers out there that wrote ‘Down Goes The Whiskey,’ and it’s a great song, and for people to make kind of silly comments about a snippet of a song, is what it is. I guess that’s the world we live in.
You live in a world where people want to claim, ‘Did this artist AI something?’ or ‘Is this artist even singing when they’re on stage?’ Whatever.
We got an artist now that people are trying to cancel her because her dad’s very, very wealthy, and it’s like, whatever. Whatever people want to do. Whatever. If you want to go to your phone and type, ‘Fart goes the butt’ then ok, that’s fine.”
And he points out the difference in the times that we’re living in, where fans (and critics) are able to deliver instant feedback when they like – or don’t like – something an artist does:
“When I listened to my heroes that made new albums, I didn’t like – and I don’t even want to say the heroes because then I’ll get cancelled because I even mentioned the heroes – but I had heroes that when I went down the album I’d be like, ‘Man what were they thinking on that song? I don’t like it.’ Skip, go listen to the songs I love. But I damn sure didn’t get to go show my face and broadcast it to the world that I don’t like it, but that’s what kids can do these days, and that’s the norm.”
Safe to say he’s not a fan:
“I just get bummed out that people spend the time to want to do that.”
Of course he’s right, that it’s easier than ever for social media trolls to hijack a post for attention online. But the one thing I’ve learned from working on the internet is to just never read the comments. It’s easier said than done, but I stopped reading the comments on everything I write and post, so if people want to shout into the void below my post then go for it. I’m not going to see it anyway.
Unfortunately for Luke, I have a bad feeling that him saying he doesn’t like it isn’t going to make people comment on his posts any less…
